Efforts of The ZONE Honored by Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho

Girl Scouts Executive Director Brian Newberry presenting the Community Award to The ZONE with Amber Waldref, Director and Krysten Proszek, Expanded Learning Coordinator.

We were so surprised last week to receive The Community Award from our local Girl Scouts organization! “This Council Award recognizes community groups or businesses who have supported a Service Unit or the Council as a whole.” The ZONE supported the Girl Scouts over the past two years in building their capacity to serve girls in the Northeast Neighborhoods of Spokane as part of our Expanded Learning Initiative. With financial support from Innovia Foundation and the leadership of Krysten Proszek on our ZONE Team, the Girl Scouts are serving over 75 girls through its Pathfinders program (modeled after a similar program in the West Central neighborhood). These girls now have access to leadership support, STEM activities, safe after-school and summer spaces, and of course the opportunity to sell cookies and attend all sorts of fun summer camps! Over 50 girls are attending some sort of day, overnight, or virtual camp this summer! We are so proud of this partnership and appreciate the recognition of the hard work, neighborhood and school relationships, and persistence through the pandemic that were required to make this happen. Krysten Proszek works so hard every day to build the capacity of our partner organizations so they can successfully meet the needs of kids and families. Congrats to Krysten and our whole team!
